Summary:
This paper relates to situations where help from a third person is necessary in everyday activities. Concepts are formed according to the general descriptive theory on disability and the especial theory on functional dependence. The traditional means to provide help for dependent people are listed and assessed. A selection of ational criteria for action in our societies is proposed: prevention, community approach for the assistance, participation and universal coverage.
Finally, the main activities, measures and resources to be eveloped and managed in the public and private sectors are proposed: primary, secondary and tertiary preventive action, accessibility to physical environments, both public and private; employment and social security measures allowing work outside the home and assistance to family members; private and public support to dependent people living at their homes; alternative accommodation or residential resources.

This article was chosen because stresses the criteria to follow when dealing with dependency from third persons. This is importan in the sense that dependency, in a functional way, is considered as a consequence of the interaction of the people with their enviroment. So there will be, along with a real situation, a perception of dependency, of lack of functionality related to the way in which every single person deals with his/her reality.
Besides CIF, that is the main reference of this article, narrative medicine can help to define which are those lacks of functionality of independency that bother the most to each patient.
