Summary:
This course presents the essential elements of the social assistance system.
The structural elements of this system are: the personnel involved in the system, the categories of beneficiaries, and social environment.
Social worker's mission is to: advice and inform the beneficiaries, participate in social issues, increase the quality of life of vulnerable social groups, improve social functioning of recipients, change attitudes and behavior, achieve social inclusion, help the elimination of discrimination at the community level. The intervention plans are performed at individually level, at a group level or at socio-global level.
The categories of beneficiaries are the poor, unemployed, discriminated and socially isolated, disabled, abused children (physical, emotional, sexual), people experiencing marital problems, drug and alcohol addicts, people who deal with the infringement of human rights, victims of domestic violence, elderly, homeless.
The social environment (institutions, services, benefits, legislation) refers to the social assistance system that works in a social context, cultural, political, economic and to the interdependence with other professions: medicine (physical needs), psychology (emotional needs) , education (cognitive needs), religion (spiritual needs).
Social services consist in community social services (basic character, generally, is granted to home, family and community) and specialized social services (for special needs offered both at home and in specialized institutions).
