The colourful scarf

Language: English
Country: Italy
Typology: health care professionals
While I was standing in for a colleague for a short period in the oncology ward, I met a girl of my age (twenty-seven years old), suffering from brain cancer in terminal phase. The thing that struck me most was to see how quietly she was facing her situation so as not to disappoint her family, her parents, her husband and her two twins of four years old. She used to wear one of those colourful scarves around her head and she said it made her feel as if she still had hair; her mother spent the day beside her and continuously sang her a song linked to her childhood, a song that I still remember even though many years have passed. After only forty-eight hours, "Laura", this was her name, passed away, leaving a great void.
