A month ago, I had to accompany my patient in an interview at a crisis center for detoxification from drugs. The patient was not motivated and, when I showed up at his house, she could not find the keys to open the front door. I tried to calm her and I asked her to think about the last time she had used the house keys. She was shaking and was becoming more and more anxious. Talking to her and reassuring her, rather than feed his anxiety, helped the patient to remember where she had placed the keys and, after a few minutes, she opened the door of her house. I am a psychologist, stories and speeches are fundamental tools for my profession.
