“A personal experience from a professional caregiver”

Language: English

Typology: health care professionals
I am professional caregiver who works with old people in their homes and in hospitals for more than 20 years. For me this is a vocational work, while I care for my patients and I like to accompany them in their disease - and in many cases - to death and to help them in order to overcome the bad times faced by almost every day. For me the hardest was catering to elderly people who are alone and need love. Sometimes I feel really sensitive with them listening to their stories of life, their suffering, and I've always felt very gratified to be there in the tough times so they would have my love and my attention. With the HEPPY project I felt very involved since I'm still learning a lot about the practice with patients and I loved knowing that already there are lines of study as the narrative medicine that put all the importance in the manners and attitudes of practitioners because I, from my experience, I also believe that this is half of the work of a caregiver: active listening, empathy and attention to human beings whom we care.
