“The best medicine is the attention to the patient”

Iris Noemí Sierra Orellana.
Language: English
Country: Spain
Typology: health care professionals
I am a professional caregiver for more than 10 years, between Argentina and Spain. When I am faced with the task of attending to a sick person, always remember the words of a patient I had at the beginning, in my medical practice, which does not know which drug had to give to lower a fever without further assistance she said: the patient care is the best medicine. Then I realized that she was calmer in my presence and that the fever was "secondary", i.e. She referred to feel better if I was there, in the room, accompanying her that not far and concerned to call other doctors. Since then always try to apply this principle: pay attention to what patients tell me, what is what hurts or concerns as a first sign of what may be happening in your body. I am very happy to have participated in the project HEPPY because I have been given keys to follow in this line of work, thanks to the narrative medicine I can check that what I thought on how care for the sick is a good practice and also it works!
